In the winter of 1619, a 23-year-old gentleman soldier named René Descartes sought refuge from the cold in Germany. He spent a day alone in a small room heated by a ceramic stove. That night, he experienced three intense dreams that changed his life. In one, he was battered by a whirlwind. In another, a clap of thunder filled his room with sparks. The final dream presented him with a dictionary and a book of poetry opened to a line asking, 'What path shall I take in life?' Descartes believed a 'spirit of truth' had visited him, commanding him to rebuild all of human knowledge on a foundation of absolute certainty. It was the beginning of his revolutionary quest.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cartesian radical doubt?
Radical doubt was René Descartes' method of rejecting any belief that had the slightest possibility of being false. He imagined a powerful 'Evil Demon' deceiving him about everything, including the physical world and even mathematics. This process was meant to clear away all uncertain beliefs to find one absolute truth.
What is Cartesian Dualism?
Cartesian Dualism is the idea that the universe is made of two distinct substances: the non-physical, thinking mind and the physical, mechanical body. Descartes viewed the body as a complex machine, like clockwork, governed by physics. He believed the mind and body interacted in the brain's pineal gland.
Why is Descartes called the 'Father of Modern Philosophy'?
Descartes shifted the basis of truth from external authorities like the Church or ancient writers to the individual's own reason and consciousness. His focus on the question 'Of what can I be certain?' established the thinking subject as the starting point for all knowledge, paving the way for the Enlightenment.
