Joseph Mallord William Turner was the son of a Covent Garden barber who rose to become one of Britain's greatest painters. His father, William, proudly displayed and sold his son's drawings for a few shillings in his shop. At just 14, Turner was admitted to the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. In 1796, at age 21, he exhibited the masterful oil painting ‘Fishermen at Sea.’ The work was a stunning study in light, contrasting the cold glow of the moon on turbulent waves with the warm, flickering light from a lantern on a fishing boat. His reputation grew rapidly. He was quickly recognized as a prodigy and by age 26, he was elected a full Royal Academician, making him one of the youngest artists in the institution’s history to receive the honor.
