With the release of Chunks v2025.12.8, I'm introducing two features that have been at the top
of my list: Today in History and dark mode.

Today in History

The Today in History feature highlights notable events that happened on today's date throughout history, along with biographies of people who were born or died on this day.

It's a simple concept, but it's become one of my favourite parts of the app. Every morning you get a fresh set of historical moments to explore — some you'll recognise, and some that will genuinely surprise you. It's the kind of feature that turns a quick app open into a "wait, Ihad no idea that happened today" moment.

For example, you might learn that on a random Tuesday in March, the Eiffel Tower officially opened, a groundbreaking scientific paper was published, and a famous composer was born — all on the same date, decades apart. Those kinds of connections make history feel more alive than a textbook ever could.

The feature pulls from a curated database of events that's continuously expanding. Each entry links to a full story or character card if you want to dig deeper, so it acts as a natural entry point into the wider Chunks library.

You can reach Today in History from either the Home screen or the Explore screen.

Dark mode

This one has been the most requested feature since launch. Dark mode follows your device's system setting automatically — if your phone is in dark mode, Chunks will be too.

I paid close attention to the reading experience here. The goal wasn't just to invert the colours, but to make sure the text contrast, image presentation, and overall feel work well in low-light environments. Whether you're reading before bed or just prefer a darker interface, it should feel comfortable and easy on the eyes.

Both features are live now in the App Store and Play Store. If you have feedback on either feature, or ideas for what you'd like to see next, email me at hello@chunks.app or send feedback directly in the app.

Thanks,
Andy.

The Zeigarnik Effect Explained: Why Unfinished Tasks Haunt You

Bluma Zeigarnik was a Soviet psychologist studying with the Berlin Gestalt school in the 1920s when she noticed something strange about how her group remembered restaurant orders. The waiter at the café where they ate could keep track of complex orders perfectly until the bill was settled — at which point he seemed to lose all memory of what they had ordered. Zeigarnik turned the observation into one of the most-cited findings in cognitive psychology: people remember interrupted or unfinished ta

Who Invented Electricity? The Messy Truth

Nobody invented electricity. Electricity is a natural phenomenon — it existed in lightning, in static, and in every atom long before humans noticed it. What people invented were ways to understand it, store it, generate it, and put it to work. That took about 300 years and a long chain of scientists and engineers: Benjamin Franklin proved lightning was electrical (1752), Alessandro Volta built the first battery (1800), Michael Faraday worked out how to generate current from motion (1831), Thomas

And there is no syllabus, no teacher, and no obvious way to know whether your understanding is actually improving. This article is a practical guide to teaching yourself philosophy as an adult — without a degree, without classes, and without
